Engenhos do Norte

Engenhos do Norte
At the tip of the small coastal village of Porto da Cruz, a rum distillery (sugar cane) unique in Europe and of its kind since it is the only one whose machinery still works with steam.
Around 1430, cane sugar was expanded in Madeira and the Portuguese became the main suppliers of the European market for "white gold", used as an exchange currency. This wealth attracted many foreign traders including a certain Christopher Columbus. Today, this culture is giving way to rhum (agricultural and amber) whose quality is internationally recognized, as evidenced by all recent international competitions. A compulsory historical and cultural stop
